Our Show

Leadership isn’t just about titles and tasks—it’s about people. On The Leader Roots Podcast, we dive deep into the everyday realities of leading with empathy, purpose, and impact. Hosted by Steven Smallwood—retired Navy veteran, former HR leader at American Airlines, and founder of Leader Roots—this show unpacks the real conversations leaders need to have, but often don’t, and concerns employees have that's sometime not expressed.

Each episode is a practical and heartfelt exploration of what it means to lead better, not just harder. From managing people dynamics and handling tough conversations, to building trust and avoiding burnout, we tackle the human struggles behind workplace performance and leadership expectations.

We talk about things like:

  • How to lead without losing yourself

  • Why listening is the most underrated leadership skill

  • What HR wishes every frontline leader knew

  • Creating accountability without shame

  • Overcoming culture stress and burnout

  • The mindset shift from managing to leading

  • Letting go of perfection and leading with authenticity

Whether you’re a seasoned leader, a new supervisor, or someone who simply wants to lead their life better, you’ll find tools, stories, and reflections that meet you right where you are. Because better leaders lead better—and it starts with strong roots.

My Story

Steven's Bio

Steven D. Smallwood is the founder of Leader Roots, a leadership development company focused on the human side of leadership. A Tulsa, Oklahoma native and Retired Navy Veteran, Steven served 20 years in the Navy, where he built a strong foundation in leadership through military training and real-world experience.

He went on to spend 25 years at American Airlines, leading aircraft maintenance teams before becoming a Human Resources Business Partner. In this role, he focused on the daily human side of technical operations, supporting teams and guiding leaders through personal and professional work relationship dynamics.

Steven shares with leaders across industries the power of effective communication through empathy, and the strength of leading with vulnerability. Through his podcast, coaching, and speaking engagements, he helps leaders and team members shift their mindset to reduce stress, build confidence, and lead more effectively.

My favorite quote and words to live by:
